All About Improv: Charles Darwin Experience

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” — Charles Darwin

The Charles Darwin Experience (CDE) has been serving up short-form comedy improv to the student body of the University of Arizona since 1997. Inspired by Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, CDE manages to pack auditoriums to maximum capacity on a weekly basis.

amanada_blogpostNestled on-campus in the college town of Tucson, Arizona, CDE uses games, gimmicks and suggestions from the audience to deliver in witty, fast-paced short-form, a style most synonymous with the television show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” However, members draw upon more than the popular program to shape their own styles of comedy.

“Personally, I watched a lot of improv when I was younger, but my biggest influences were always stand-up, ” said Co-Director Harrison Lehrman, who cited Mitch Hedberg as a heavy comedic influence, among others.

Comprised of majors from pre-law to creative writing to neuroscience, CDE members transform into the unexpected, quick-talking, ever-changing characters that Wildcats young and old have flocked to witness.

“It’s a fun time to be more of myself. It’s very freeing, ” said Co-Director Michael Campbell.

Though cast members come from all disciplines, each has a true passion for comedy which stemmed long before setting foot at UA. The troupe’s dedication and practice to the craft are manifested in the chaotic hilarity of each performance.

“Even though there are thirteen of us, some of us are similar, but we’re all very distinct, ” added Producer Dana Dobbins. “We all bring something different to the troupe.”

One thing is for sure – this group has become a treasured mainstay at the University of Arizona for a reason. You haven’t seen anything quite like the Charles Darwin Experience.

Social Darwinism

by FriskyFerret

The anti-Christian push for social Darwinism has been to blame for the shift of attitudes toward the existence of YAHWEH.
Many of the great founders of the physical sciences were believers in a higher intelligence, be they Copernicus, Kelvin, Mendel, Faraday, Boyle, Newton, Descartes, Galilei, Kepler, Bacon, Planck, Einstein and amazingly enough, the "god" of social Darwinism himself:
The impossibility of conceiving that this grand and wondrous universe, with our conscious selves, arose through chance, seems to me the chief argument for
the existence of God.
